I’m going to tell you because it’s the element that elevates Jamaica from clunky roll and move into something altogether more satisfying. Yes, there is some luck involved in the dice rolls and card draws, but Jamaica isn’t a complete roll and move luck fest. The Captain starts another round by rolling the 2 dice and placing them on the board as the results for the morning and evening actions. This treasure card can be points for or against the players total (and if this type of card is drawn, it must be laid face down next to the player) or it can be a card the otherwise helps the player. I might even recommend throwing the ghost ship in to a three, four or five player game every so often just to mix things up a bit.

It manages to avoid anyone running away with the game, everyone has a fair chance of winning all the way to the end. Well, the original game Jamaica came out way back in 2007 – and ten years is a long time to go between the release of the main game and its first expansion!

Then Henry Morgan (a former pirate, so you know he was trustworthy) became lieutenant governor and promised to clean it all up. Much has been written about the components and art for this game and I won’t belabor those points except to say that everything is gorgeous and top notch. It made it hard to read while sitting and hard to find an item in the rules if you wanted to check something. The icon in the upper left corner corresponds to the daytime action and the icon in the upper right corresponds to the nighttime action.

They move backward to the nearest space indicated on the die–either a port (circle), sea space (square), or treasure space (skull and bones). However, you have to bear in mind that everyone else around the table will also be trying to bend their cards to the same improbable ends.In the original, when a player had a Shortage, they had to pay all they could of that resource and then move backwards to the next space that they could fully pay for. For a game with such a simple rule-set too it has a frustrating number of grey areas where house-rules will have to reign. Our mission is to produce engaging articles like reviews, tips and tricks, game rules, strategies, etc. If we can’t afford to pay that cost, we get cleaned out of whatever possessions we have available and then kicked backwards until we reach a space we can afford. Think of it like a bunch of stressed pirates just trying to get stuff on board without having the time to do an inventory.

The technical storage or access is strictly necessary for the legitimate purpose of enabling the use of a specific service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user, or for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network. Jamaica is a wild hunt for fame and wealth, a beautiful combination of dice and card luck as well as tactics. It’s set dressing – at its heart Jamaica is an uncomplicated racing game where the golden age of piracy is the setting and not the story. The attacker spends the number of gunpowder tokens of his choice and adds that number to the result of a combat die roll.

The left and right symbols on the top of the action card links to the day and night time die numbers. We wish that new characters were revealed each time a player visited a port, and those not selected were left available for the next player to dock at a port. And with that, in the board game Jamaica you and your friends are set to race around the island of Jamaica, capturing treasure, battling your opponents, and trying to be the first one back to Port Royal! Each player takes on the role of a pirate captain, commanding a mighty vessel in a great race for treasure and glory.

Pretty soon, they’ll only have resource cards in their hand to choose from and will be sitting in a space loading for a bit while you catch up with movement (and battles). Even if you don’t have the right card, much of the tactical depth comes from making the wrong cards do the right things. Then imagine you did that only for someone else to land, attack your ship, steal a random treasure and take that cursed treasure off your hands for you. The shove gets harder when you give me a box that looks like I’m opening a treasure chest because I am at heart still five years old and enthralled by shiny doubloons.Second- if a player ends the game by moving to the final space, and then another player moves to the final space that turn, do they fight each other? The top left icon indicates the action you can take in the morning and the top right is the evening action. Battles are mainly resolved by rolling a “combat” die, but players may improve their chances by using “gunpowder” tokens from their holds, if they loaded any on previous turns. The parts that take the most time in a round are the battles because players must choose how many cannon tokens to add then roll the dice. We need to do something, but the clever move might not be the most immediately useful especially if the captain allocates their rolled dice in a way that doesn’t help us as much as we’d like.
