I was actually worried about snapping the latter during torque testing, which isn’t often a concern on 15-inch models, especially at this weight and thickness. Acer’s environmentally friendly approach extends even to the packaging, 85% of which is made up of recycled paper. The update doesn’t change our rating our opinion, but added tangibly more endurance to the notebook. And in an effort to sustain the lifespan of the laptop and lengthen the time before it ends up in a landfill, Acer makes it easy to get inside the Aspire Vero to make repairs or upgrades by using standard screws on the bottom panel. While the laptop incorporates a bit of trash, the result is anything but: solid performance, upgradable components, Windows 11 out the box, and an undeniably handsome design.

The chassis and screen bezel use 30% recycled hardware, and the screen and keycaps use 99% and 50% recycled material respectively. The keyboard feels a bit light when compared to more robust typing units, but only serious typists should look elsewhere. And like Acer’s better budget and mid-range plastic laptops, the casing flex is not excessive — just a little if you press down fairly hard on the keyboard. PCMark 10's Full System Drive storage subtest, on the other hand, seemed to give the Acer Aspire Vero the most trouble. The Vero's 12th Gen Core i7 was more than three minutes quicker than last year's 11th Gen system in our timed HandBrake test, which involves transcoding a 4K video clip to 1080p resolution, but the Aspire still landed near the back of the field. Acer’s machine uses Intel’s integrated Iris Xe graphics, which means you can only play casual games. The accompanying Iris Xe integrated graphics have also been given a small boost with a maximum clock speed of 1. The lid and palm rests have a slightly coarse texture with a speckled grey color, reminiscent of handmade recycled paper.

The Vero's 1080p IPS screen is no threat to the dazzling OLED display of the HP Pavilion Plus 14, but it's reasonably bright and offers a huge increase in color accuracy over the dismal results of the 2021 model. Intel’s integrated GPUs have come on quite a bit in recent years but they still don’t give laptops genuine gaming capabilities. Harder typists will notice a hint of hollowness as the force of key presses reverberates around the plastic chassis, which you don’t tend to feel in an ultra-dense metal design. If you care a lot about the environmental impact of your laptop, you shouldn’t be adding up the recycled plastic inside of it.The yellow highlights continue on the bottom panel with yellow feet and on the two keys of the keyboard, which I’ll get to shortly. The first benchmark we run is PCMark 10, a test that simulates a variety of Windows programs to give an overall performance score for office workflows. BNPL is an interest bearing option that allows you to delay payments on your purchases for up to 12 months depending on how much you spend. It has no trouble running loads of browser tabs simultaneously and tackling word processors and spreadsheets while you’ve got communication and media apps running, and it handles mainstream photo-editing and programming. If you look carefully at the pictures of the Vero you will see that the letters E and R are printed in mirror image and in yellow.

Remove the base panel and you can easily access the SSD, wireless card and the single SO-DIMM memory slot, which houses one of the 8GB memory modules, the other being soldered to the motherboard. It was a middle-of-the-road runner in our Cinebench image editing and Geekbench math operations tests. Designed to be easily repaired, upgraded, and recycled, the eco-smart Aspire Vero is a testament to more sustainable operations.Featuring Intel's 12th gen Core i5-1235U CPU and 16GB of RAM, the Vero breezes through even the most demanding tasks - from dealing with large documents to multi-tasking.

Both chips use Intel’s entry-level Iris Xe graphics core, and both are low-power CPUs designed for slim laptops. I’m pretty much a touch typist so don’t glance at the keys with any great frequency, but I still find it distracting. Again, that slimline NUM pad lets it sit almost centrally in the laptop, earning it bonus usability points. Converting video files is a CPU-heavy task, one that’s probably best relegated to better-equipped workstation laptops. You do have to put up with so-so battery life, a display with weak-looking colour and a design that may not cut it if you value portability. It may be the last hurrah of the Tiger Lake line before Intel releases its 12th gen chips and tries to claw back some of the ground it has recently lost to AMD’s Ryzen processors. If you step up, you don’t just get the better CPU – that machine has 16GB of memory and a 1TB SSD too. Of course, the somewhat non-unique nature of its lofty claims hasn’t stopped Acer from branding the Vero as an eco-minded laptop up and down.
