To confirm any information, we recommend to check the latest brochure for the product or contact us to learn more. You wipe the particles away with the barely damp side then use the dry side to fully remove the moisture. We found this didn’t completely eliminate static or mess, though in our long term testing, the OXO was noticeably tidier than the Baratza Encore.

Instead, you have to hold down the timer dial button for three seconds to activate the Pulse Mode; to deactivate the Pulse Mode, you spin the dial. And some grinders come with an integrated scale, so you can weigh out the beans before you grind them. But with a stepless grinder, if you change the grind setting at all (for example, if you like to switch between coffee-brewing methods), it’s not easy to repeat the optimal settings for your daily brews. To adjust grind size, you turn the hopper to the preferred tick mark on the base (measured in numbered intervals from 0 to 40, with 40 being the coarsest), so you can quickly move from setting to setting and remember your preferences. For those who have an ongoing problem with static cling, prevailing wisdom says to wait a few minutes before removing the grounds chamber from the grinder, allowing the dust to settle, as it were. Burr sets—they have two pieces, a top and a bottom, which work a little like teeth—can be made of steel (or sometimes ceramic or plastic, which are not ideal and not currently a part of any machine we considered), and they come in a variety of widths and configurations. One thing I think it’s necessary for any Baratza Encore grinder review to cover is that the grinder does have one significant downside: the amount of bean debris it produces, especially when used without sufficient care (read: often for me) is notable. So if you’re looking for a great all-round home grinder to take your coffee-making experience to the next level, look no further – The Baratza Encore has everything you need. If you remember that it’s for non-espresso home brewing, it’ll put both blade and manual grinders to shame without skipping a beat.

Lots of directions for different brewers (either online or with the included manual) will actually specify grind sizes for the Baratza Encore. Because of how a blade grinder works, it’s always going to “lose track” of individual beans and bits, and so it’ll make some into fine powder, while leaving other bits as big half-bean hunks. The original encore has 40 grind settings all at the same level of adjustment, so what this means is that you don’t have the fine-tuning ability that you’d usually need for espresso.

But we’d rather you have a machine that can make you better tasting coffee for up to a decade instead of one that’s mere eye candy. I’ve got nothing against an espresso shot, but it’s too strong and intense a flavor for me to get really excited by it. It won’t produce the tiny adjustments in fine grinds that thrill serious espresso enthusiasts, but its output is consistent enough to create a decent shot.Ultimately, none of the coffee veterans we spoke with were very surprised that Baratza’s Encore and Virtuoso+ (our current upgrade pick) grinders came out on top over and over again.

She had only one issue with the OXO, after grinding a lot of oily beans on a very hot and humid day, and after a year of use. The main idea behind the design is that the wing nut will slow down the feeding of beans to avoid stalling the motor. Those beans leave more of a residue, which you need to remove occasionally (every few weeks, for oily beans) for peak flavor and grinder performance.

But a few offer easy visual clues on the machines themselves as to where on the dial the starting points for various brew methods fall.
