Particularly the scene where Batman visits Gordon in hospital to let him know that he’s back, that’s pretty much the same as in the movie, save for the obvious differences. I often have trouble getting into the ultra-dark books, and I'm glad the pendulum has swung a little further away from that.

Matina: Yeah, unfortunately I found myself skimming many of the “talking heads” scenes, after a while they’re simply not engaging anymore. He’s been deprived of food—aside from small, rancid portions to keep him alive—and he’s been drugged. Batman must stop the army of the homeless recruited by the mysterious Deacon Blackfire in this new edition of a classic title illustrated by master horror artist Bernie Wrightson, co-creator of the SWAMP THING.Outside some brief hallucinations of the Joker and Two-Face, none of Batman's Rogues Gallery make any sort of appearance, the story focusing exclusively on Deacon Blackfire and his cult. I enjoy it when Batman stories get back to his street level crime fighting with not superpowers involved. So many elements of this book remind me of the Waco Siege, and I have to wonder if those events actually inspired The Cult.

If Knightfall details Batman’s physical destruction, The Cult details his mental destruction—in all its gritty pulp and horror illustration. However, the murder is shown in such a fashion to one could argue Batman didn't actually do the killing. Even though I know Batman will get back up, the creative team manages to make this more thrilling and exciting than most other stories. In perhaps the most shocking moments in the arc, Rat-Face attempts to make Batman attack an innocent African American man who he falsely claims is a pimp. One scene of note- when the young would-be comics artist gets killed by the underworlders- the full page of simply the blood stained artwork- is exceptional- and moving. Its pretty much like BATMAN RIP but it came before and you have a figure named Deacon Blackfire who breaks Batman and well giving him silent suggestions and all to take him under control and we see the origins of this Blackfire and how he might be an immortal man since centuries and in the present how he plans to take over Gotham using his religion and what not and well Bruce first is part of it, then escapes, gains his sanity and Robin looking for him and meanwhile the city goes into chaos, his believers taking over the city, fortification and like being separated from the rest of the country (think No mans land) and then how Batman fights this villain to save Gotham like rest of the stories usually do and will he win or not? Casper: You know, Jason’s portrayal here actually really strikes me, because it’s a well-known fact that Starlin hates Robin.
