The pair would also work together on a couple of Fu Manchu outings, Dark Places and a good old Pirate adventure. The expedition arrives at Bear Island, location of a NATO base and the site of a former U-boat station, and, from his German colleagues Jungbeck and Heyter, they learn that Larsen is missing. it's routine adventure- flick stuff: blood, guts and (a little) suspense intercut with acting of appalling quality, and dialogue that makes one yearn for the days of silent movies. Bear Island is a 1979 Anglo-Canadian thriller film loosely based on the 1971 novel Bear Island by Alistair MacLean.

It is seen in hands of several characters including Lechinski ( Christopher Lee) and Frank Lansing ( Donald Sutherland).

The filmography is also great for a self-shot action movie under such conditions (if only the "found footage" genre films could be this smooth). Bear Island turned out to be Goodnight Vienna in terms of big screen evocations of MacLean’s work, but his books, bigger than Bond back in the day, would still work as highly recognisable IP for reboots, remakes and re-workings, and the bar isn’t set particularly high here. Finally we have Lloyd Bridges who is a friend to Sutherland and his partner when lesser known actors begin turning up dead.

I think the isolation of the wintery yet deadly surroundings open up all kinds of possibilities for filmmakers.

One of their colleagues already on the island has gone missing (murdered you understand), it will become apparent later that he is a Norwegian intelligence operative. Drafted at 19 into the Royal Navy, he worked his way up from Ordinary Seaman to Leading Torpedo Officer while serving in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Far East.
