Death Note is the anime equivalent of Event TV, it’s the Lost, the 24, the nu-Doctor Who of the anime world, where you just get on the ride and hold on for dear life, marvelling at the twists and turns as they occur, just taking the show at face value and revelling in its apparent brilliance. If there is any problem with it, it is there could be another Death Note related murder: in the form of a Hollywood adaptation of the series next year, with Nat Wolff playing the role of a character named “Light Turner”.

Death Note brings a compelling and unique experience anime and it also remains relatively faithful to the original source material and adapts it quite well; something which should also please fans as it has done for nearly a decade. Now, I personally don’t mind them changing the name of the character and setting the story in the USA.

From my perspective the Death Note Blu-ray provides the best experience you can receive from the series; but you’d need to own the series on both DVD and Blu-ray to get the best of both worlds. As you would expect from a show with such dark themes, there’s plenty use of shadows and moody lighting. Anyone who has watched them both knows what I mean: the similarities between Light and Lelouch are uncanny. The story follows the highly intelligent 17-year-old student Light Yagami, who one day spots a black book falling past his classroom window.

Light Yagami is a high school student; actually he is an exemplary high school student, fiercely intelligent and regularly scoring the highest grades in Japan. Also catch three hours of bonus content, including interviews with the Japanese creators, behind-the-scenes footage with the English and Japanese voice casts, production art, audio commentary and much more!In short the Blu-rays deliver the best visual (and audio) experience when compared to the previous PAL DVD release of the series; however the disapointing aspect comes in the form of bonus materials. There is still the rare moment of judder over pans and scrolls, but this is a very pleasant viewing experience in high definition.
