Update: When I originally read this book, it was a book I thought would be beneficial to re-read every 2 years. As Kent Hughes explains in the beginning of his book, Disciplines of a Godly Man, in today's culture there is an alarming lack of spiritual leadership in today's evangelical churches. The impure act is an act of despite against God's good gift at the very moment it is being proffered. I think I'll read this book again in the next few years to revisit his great points on the disciplines of a Godly man. To be fair, he spends the last 6 pages or so speaking on the disciplines in the context of grace and warning against legalism.

The final chapter is about the relationship of God’s grace to discipline which I kind of wished was the first chapter of the book instead of the end. As someone who has attended church, Bible studies, and retreats for most of my life, I’ll admit that the content is mostly information that I have heard in the past. Relationships - which he identifies as the disciplines of purity, marriage, fatherhood, and friendship. Went through this book and a few other books with some guys at our church over the last 6 months and this was definitely a favorite in the group.Having just taken over the leadership of our Men's Ministry' at my Church this book has opened my eyes to what God wants to see if ALL men. Thankfully I had such a father and so the book wasn't as groundbreaking for me as it has been for some of my friends.

I have prayed and read daily since I began this study, and I have grown so much closer to God and the Lord Jesus Christ! This book is Probably best for men ages 15-21 as they begin to form their understanding of what it means to be a man and how to take on the necessary responsibilities in life and the church. This valuable book focuses on practical discipline in many differing aspects of our lives in 19 chapters split into 6 parts. If there is a spark of spiritual desire in your soul, this book will surely kindle it into a blazing passion for godly discipline. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. Again, chapters like being involved in church, giving money, and witnessing (evangelism) are typical and as expected.

There are some books, though very few, that remain ‘evergreen’—that through the years remain as useful and challenging as the day they were written. I think this is a serviceable introduction to the disciplines but readers should approach it with the Gospel firmly in their heart and mind. This book was not only encouraging but also convicting, providing insight on how we tend to approach different situations, people, and God’s word.
