Description

The book's underlying theme of boozy revelry continues, and one occasion the author ends up in front of a magistrate. There are several good books about the Battle of Britain and the American B17 bombers, but these are about day time operations. Guy Gibson was the leader of the famous Dambusters raid and Enemy Coast Ahead is a vivid, honest account, widely regarded as one of the best books on World War II.

This new book has been published to mark the 75th anniversary of his death and includes an introduction by James Holland, a historian and broadcaster; notes by Dr Robert Owen, the Official Historian of the No. This book was written by him in 1944, a different time, but some of his judgment, like the naming of his beloved dog, is shocking to today’s sensibilities. Hardcover Fair Published by Michael Joseph (London, 1946) First edition (NOT part of Lit and History of Aviation Series) Cover shows edgewear, notably on spine ends and bottom edge Previous owner's names on endpapers Pages tanning Contents otherwise clean, binding sound. There is a table at the start of the book referencing those pilots lost whilst he served with individual squadrons, sobering reading when he mentions a particular colleague in the text, you refer to the table and realise he subsequently died. Upon reaching and acquiring the target, the player uses target maps to play attack turns, each representing approximately 8 minutes of historical time. The dam busters raid is legendary, and since my Dad was a USAAF bombardier in the Pacific and my wife’s uncle was an RCAF navigator assigned to RAF 627 Squadron in the Pathfinder force flying Lancs and Mosquitos, I thought I could learn a lot from this book. Because this was written before the war ended and much of the technology used was cloaked in secrecy, there's a certain amount of obfuscation and the dams raid itself only takes up about 20 percent of the book.

The game is also presented in nine scenarios, each isolating a particular aspect of Operation Chastise. While not 100% accurate in describing the "Dambusters" mission this first person narrative is outstanding. In the next few chapters Gibson recounts his time on the Hampden medium-bomber with nerve jangling, fatigue ridden, accounts of flying deep into enemy territory. Gibson was part of the only force, which for a period of several dark years, seemed to be the only means of taking the war to the enemy. This book maps out the brief service record of this very brave man, from his operations at the beginning of the second world war, to his most recognised raid on the Dams of wartime Germany.

All the men awarded decorations before or during the raid are represented in this game by their own marker, each imparting a unique characteristic to its crew.
