There are fruit and ‘spice-forward’ flavours, such as ginger and pepper – which the team credits to those Bimber whisky casks – and you should also detect a range of other flavours from smoky charred oak to some fresh, tingly herbs. A quick sniff is enough to prick up your senses, with a swirl of cinnamon and vanilla spices leading the way, while the flavour brings some boozy raisins, sweet coffee and black pepper to the cocktail party.

The English whisky distilleries are all at various stages of development with the oldest St George’s Distillery brewing whisky for nearly 20 years [17] and The Cotswolds distillery is the largest producer of whisky in England. More recently they have added distilling to their booze-making exploits, with gins, vodkas and a single malt whisky among its range. All the barley used in the firm’s whisky production is grown in the Cotswolds and each bottle bears the name of the farm that provided the key ingredient. Founded by James Nelstrop, the site started with former Laphroaig distiller Iain Henderson overseeing the operation.

This single malt whisky was distilled in early August 2007 and was one of the first port casks we ever filled. Jim Murray dubbed this European whisky of the year in the 2018 edition of his famous Whisky Bible and no wonder – an elegant expression with an appealing creaminess, and dangerously smooth and drinkable.

Szor sees his contemporaries as part of a broader world whisky movement far beyond the UK’s shores, like Chichibu in Japan, Stauning in Denmark, Zuidam in the Netherlands, Westland in Seattle, Swedish distilleries Mackmyra and High Coast, and leading producers in India and Tasmania.

The people who live here have the huge privilege of essentially living in 19 th-century England, just one hour away from London by train, and that’s a big draw for visitors. Originally bursting onto the scene with Forest gin (the only gin to have been awarded two separate double-gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirit Awards), the firm is now onto its eleventh whisky blend.

Here at House of Malt, we have a wide selection of English whisky from some of the finest distilleries in the country. After putting the initial release of single malt (Chapter 6 in the saga) on our site, it sold out almost instantly. However, the production of English single malt whisky ceased around 1905 with the closure of Lea Valley Distillery, in Stratford, London, by the Distillers Company Limited, one of the forerunners of Diageo. Beautiful venue in renovated old Town Hall with amazing whisky and a good story behind it and thoughtfully considers support.

Each bottle has its own character and speaks to the terroir that distinguishes English whisky from its more established cousins. Have a look through this list of English whiskies currently available and hopefully you’ll find at least a few that will convince you that England is one of the most exciting whisky producing nations around. The whisky is very light in colour, and it’s light on the palate too, with some depth provided by some prune-like fruit and a drying oak finish. Founder’s Choice has particularly resonated,” says Szor, “because those freshly charred casks give you a bourbon-like quality with a lot of flavors that Americans understand: big, intense coffee and chocolate flavors, beautifully balanced with berry notes. The whiskies were also very good and you don’t need to be a expert to understand or enjoy this experience!
