Description

There is a moment, in the middle of Florence Given’s Girlcrush, when our protagonist, Eartha, sits euphoric in the gender neutral toilet cubicle of a queer nightclub and notices fresh graffiti written on the door in lipstick. It was set in 2030 which made no sense and it was obvious that all of these little things were just because the author didn't want to use real life things like London or Instagram. It’s a kind of rags-to-unexpected-riches-to-devastating-realisation-back-to-older-wiser-rags type tale, almost 18th century in progression, except set in a thoroughly modern, even slightly futuristic world where life online is even more all consuming than we know it now. I read it for both of us to save you from the hours of your life you will never get back if you were planning to read it.

It’s a neat trick in how the way a scene is portrayed can change how the reader/watcher thinks about the character and the scenario.

Und es machte mir auch Lust, mal das Original in die Hand zu nehmen, um zu sehen, wie das denn dort geschrieben wurde und ob mir dort überhaupt irgendwas auffällt.

The book is also emblazoned with Given’s signature branding, with its title coming from one of Given’s t-shirt designs (“Maybe it’s a girl crush, maybe you’re queer”) and the cover image resembling one of Given’s distinctive gap-toothed illustrations. Her work confronts oppressive attitudes towards women and their bodies and she uses her platform to raise awareness of issues surrounding sexuality, consent and gender. for a near future dystopian to work i actually need to understand the context of which it is taking place. A self-professed feminist, Given went viral in 2018 for starting a petition to cancel the “fat-shaming” (and just terrible) Netflix series Insatiable. It’s 2030 in a fictional British city and Eartha, an artist, has just realised that her long-term boyfriend is a cheating asshole and that she is bisexual.Florence Given is a bestselling feminist author, award-winning podcaster and illustrator based in London. Girlcrush is equal parts awful and unintentionally hilarious and is also kind of a manual for everything feminism should not be. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Wie gesagt: Triggerwarnungen wären hier definitiv angebracht gewesen, denn das ist sicher nicht für alle Menschen geeignet. This author has tried to do something pretty wonderful; use their voice to promote feminism, queerness, bisexuality and show us that social media is detrimental to our health and well-being… and that the world is still controlled by men.
