There is the openly-addressed problem of faith and doubt, and Quixote’s question of how valuable his purity can be when he has never known real temptation. It is a short, mildly amusing, read that is worth it for its meditations on faith and the organisations that control it: "I am riddled by doubts.

But Greene uses its own form of a dilemma here to exploit the meaning and purpose of faith in something "Higher" than the banality of human existence. Like Cervantes’s classic, this comic, picaresque fable offers enduring insights into our life and times. g., birth control) are debated; and they'll eventually agree that Quixote is a "Catholic in spite of the Curia" while the Mayor is a "Communist. This is quite clear and for Greene mortgages, marriage, kids and the bourgeois life not only held no appeal but he was quite repelled by it. The modern characters, Father Quixote and Sancho, go on a journey and discuss their views of society, politics, and religion. The book is a pastiche of the classic 1605 and 1615 Spanish novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes with many moments of comedy, but also offers reflection on matters such as life after a dictatorship, Communism, and the Catholic faith. As I read it, it occurred to me that the two main characters, Father Quixote and the Communist mayor, Sancho, must have represented two sides of GG's personality. Through 67 years of writings, which included over 25 novels, he explored the ambivalent moral and political issues of the modern world, often through a Catholic perspective.

The ending, when Monsignor celebrates mass without any vessel or host was incredibly moving and reminded me so much of Babette's feast. At some points, Graham Greene seems to have gotten inspiration from the universe of Giovanni Guarechi's "Don Camilo".So in Monsignor Quixote - read Father/Monsignor Quixote for Don Quixote; the deposed communist Mayor for Sancho Panza; Rocinante the exhausted car for Rocinante the exhausted horse and religious/theological writings along with those of Marx and Lenin for tales of Chivalry.
